The Herpetology Department at the Saint Louis Zoo manages a collection of over 150 species of reptiles and amphibians. In addition to displaying these species to our guests at the Zoo, the Herpetology Department is heavily involved in the conservation of many imperiled species through conservation-breeding programs and our WildCare Institute Centers and Programs.
The primary responsibilities of a keeper in the Herpetology Department include: Caring for a large, diverse collection of amphibians and reptiles, includingvenomous snakes, crocodilians and large constrictors. Major tasks include cleaning and maintaining animal habitats and service areas; feeding and watering specimens; water quality testing; aquatic and HVAC system maintenance; behavioral observations; maintaining accurate records; interacting with and educating the public; conservation-breeding projects; assisting veterinary and facility maintenance staff as needed; evaluating and improving animal welfare; using evidence-based animal care practices; assisting with research as needed; maintaining a clean and orderly workspace; and completing additional projects as assigned.
Specifically, we are looking for a candidate that has a bachelor’s Degree in Biology/Zoology and previous keeper experience working with reptiles and amphibians. Strong knowledge/background in herpetology/herpetoculture and experience working with venomous snakes and aquatic systems preferred. Good writing and speaking skills and the ability to work alone and as part of a team are required. Must have the physical ability to perform required duties as assigned including standing for long periods of time, lifting (which may include up to 40-50 lbs.), bending, and working in rooms of varied temperature (56–85° F). Good keeper safety record required. Diver certification a plus. All successful candidates for this position will be required to submit to a criminal background check and drug test. COVID vaccinations are required for this position.
