Thompson Coburn LLP currently has an exempt position available in our St. Louis office for a full time Human Resources Generalist with five years of progressive human resources experience.  Qualified applicants will have a Bachelor degree in Human Resources or a related field.  The person selected for this position must be able to work in a fast-paced environment and, have experience with multi-state leave of absence administration.  Experience working in a professional services firm is also a preferred qualification for this position.

Job Responsibilities

  • Responsible for managing all leaves of absence including but not limited to FMLA, STD/LTD, ADA, Workers Compensation, Military and specific state required leaves. Ensures compliance with applicable federal and state law, and maintains electronic and paper records to reflect same.
  • Provide HR support to leaders and staff regarding performance management, employee relations, employee engagement and other HR initiatives.
  • Proactively alerts HR management on all potential HR related issues and prepares potential solutions.
  • Participates in coaching and counseling of employees on general employee relations issues and makes recommendations for resolutions. This includes documenting investigative interviews and coordinating disciplinary meetings.
  • Serve as key contact for employees with questions regarding leaves of absence. Engages in interactive communication with employee regarding requests for reasonable accommodations.
  • Maintains knowledge of state and federal legal requirements and government reporting regulations affecting human resources functions and ensures policies, procedures and reporting are in compliance.
  • Ensures all HR policies are posted and updated per regulatory requirements.
  • Conducts New Hire Policy & Procedure training to all new hires. 
  • Responsible for Administration of harassment prevention training programs to all new hires as well as current employees and Partners.

Additional Responsibilities:

  • Assists with drafting and administration of various Human Resources policies and procedures for all Firm personnel.
  • Conducts research, compiles information, and presents viable solutions regarding policy, procedure and/or benefits as needed.

Job Requirements

  • Expert level knowledge of principles and practices of human resources administration as well as employment laws in California, Illinois, Missouri, and Washington D.C.
  • Intermediate proficiency with Microsoft Word, Excel, and Outlook required.
  • Must have ability to balance multiple projects and have strong project and time management skills.  Must possess a high attention to detail.
  • Must display an aptitude for working in a fast paced environment with a demonstrated ability to work autonomously, take direction, and exercise good judgement.  Must have ability to reason and apply common-sense understanding to situations encountered.
  • A high level of professionalism and interpersonal skills in order to communicate and work well with employees at all levels within the organization and maintain all information in the strictest of confidence.  Must use tact and diplomacy when dealing with others.
  • Ability to read, write, and communicate fluent English; ability to compose documents in the appropriate business style using correct grammar and spelling; ability to communicate clearly using proper grammar and diction over the telephone.
  • Ability to simultaneously process routine daily functions, resolve sensitive issues, and complete complex assignments utilizing above average critical thinking skills.
  • Ability to travel as necessary.
  • This is a full time position which requires working in the office a minimum of 40 hours on a regular basis. Oftentimes, it may also require working outside of normal business hours to ensure completion of position requirements.
  • The physical demands of this position are representative of those that might be met by an employee in order for him or her to successfully perform the essential functions of the position.  These include being both mobile and stationary throughout the workday, having the ability to transport 15 pounds and being able to operate a computer and other business equipment found in the office.
