Thompson Coburn LLP currently has a position available in our St. Louis office for a full-time Controller to manage the aspects of financial management, regulatory and financial reporting and budgets as well as development of internal control policies and procedures. Candidates will have a minimum of eight years of progressively responsible experience, preferably serving in a professional services firm environment. Qualified candidates will have a Bachelor degree in Accounting or Finance. CPA licensure is required.
Job Responsibilities

Directs the operations of the accounting department and any outsourced functions, including the design of an organizational structure adequate for achieving the Firm’s goals and objectives.

Administers the accounting operations of all legal entities within the Firm, especially their control systems, transaction-processing operations, and policies and procedures.

Manages the reporting function including timely and accurate financial statements, budgets, variance analysis, analytics, metrics and benchmarks and other financial analyses.

Oversees the external financial audit including compliance with the Firm’s basis of accounting and relations with external auditors.

Maintains a documented system of accounting policies and procedures.

Safeguards the Firm’s assets, advocates for compliance measures, and ensures compliance with government reporting requirements and tax filings.

Recommends corrective action for financial, tax, compliance or Retirement Plan lapses.

Must possess a fundamental understanding of the processes, procedures and compliance requirements associated with the administration of ERISA-compliant defined contribution plans.

Advises management of accounting pronouncements, industry practices, technology developments, tax laws and pending legislation including the potential impact on the Firm. Makes effort to anticipate legislative, authoritative or business changes that may have an impact on the Firm.

Assists with tax planning for Partnership.

Maintains professional and technical knowledge by attending educational workshops, reviewing professional publications, establishing personal networks and participating in professional societies.

Must be able to learn quickly, comprehend structured query languages and table designs in database platforms and be familiar with complex relational database applications.

This is a full time position which requires working in the office a minimum of 40 hours on a regular basis. Oftentimes it may include working outside of normal business hours to ensure completion of position requirements.

Ability to travel if necessary, but generally not to exceed 20% of the time.

The physical demands of this position are representative of those that must be met by an employee in order for him or her to successfully perform the essential functions of the position. These include being both mobile and stationary throughout the work day, having the ability to transport 20 pounds and being able to operate a computer and other business equipment found in the office.
