POSITION AVAILABLE: Mount Maker
The Saint Louis Art Museum seeks to fill the position of mount maker, depending on qualifications. The successful candidate will be under the direction of the objects conservator. SLAM’s conservation department is a full-service department, with conservators in the specialties of paintings, objects, paper, and textile, plus a temporary part-time mount maker assistant. There is a separate, full equipped mount making studio. The museum is currently undergoing major re-installations of its collections, and the installation of its contemporary art collections in a new wing. The successful candidate will design, fabricate and document museum-quality, seismically stable mounts for objects from the comprehensive (ancient to contemporary) collections of the Saint Louis Art Museum.
QUALIFICATIONS: Bachelor's degree with emphasis in studio arts is preferred; prior museum experience required. Experience handling works of art required. This position requires skill and experience in the precision fabrication and finishing of metals such as brass, steel and aluminum; occasionally Plexiglas and wood; and with tools and general shop equipment, welders, torches, band saw, buffers and grinders. Digital photography and computer skills required, with knowledge of MS Word and Excel, and TMS, and Photoshop preferred. Knowledge and practice of appropriate safety procedure required.
JOB PURPOSE: The successful candidate will have effective oral and written communication skills, ability to work to deadlines, and to work both independently and collaboratively with conservators and curators, designers and installers. This is an excellent position for an experienced museum mount maker or one aspiring to move up in responsibility
